RYAN STARTED THE FIRE!

Why Hip-Hop didn't suck in '94 - 17.02.09

I’m back in work after a long weekend in Amsterdam. Lots of smoking, drinking and eating the unhealthiest foods know to man. It was superb!!! I’m not enjoying work though, I’ve got piles of paperwork to catch up on.

I’m setting off down south on Friday morning to Tetbury to start with the tracking for the All We Have EP. I’m beyond excited! I can’t wait to get in the studio.

Here is a concept of what the CD is guna look like…

I’ll be chilling out all week, I need to catch up on some sleep. I’ll be in bed early watching movies, I’ve been so busy this year, I hardly had any time to myself, so I’m looking forward to winding down.

The Wackness. Awesome movie, I really enjoyed seeing Sir Ben Kingsley walking around the New York streets selling weed from an ice-cream cart. I watched the movie last night, it was hilarious. The movie is set in the summer of 1994 and it’s got a slammin’ soundtrack! It’s a real feel good movie its own strange little way.

Focus more on the Dopeness and less on the Wackness y’all!

Top 5

Straight Edge Dan and I email each other at work with ‘Top 5’ lists. We’ll just be having a normal conversation, then all of a sudden he’ll just reply with “all time Top 5 wrestlers” Or “all time “Top 5 Simpsons characters” we cover a wide variety of cool shit! Top 5 Misfits Songs, SNES games, Ice-Cream flavours etc.

Dan hasn’t been in work for weeks, this SUCKS! I need my daily dose of ‘Top 5!’

Rain City

We’re still looking for artwork for the All We Have ‘Rain City’ EP. Phil emailed me this photo yesterday. We can’t use it due to copyright issues. It’s a photo of an old rainy Manchester day in Piccadilly Gardens. I’m now literally obsessed with this photo. It was taken by a German Photographer.

It’s such a shame we can’t use it, I have my heart set on it now.

At least we’re still friends / At least we’re still alive

I popped along to the Manchester Academy last night to see Alkaline Trio. They are without a doubt, one of my favourite bands of all time. They’re SO good live! They haven’t lost it, plus their newer records amaze me, they can do no wrong in my eyes. They played a really good mix of old and new songs, including “Help Me” (I love that track), “Jaded”, “Goodbye Forever” (my favourite song) and they even finished with Radio. Perfect!

I think that last night was like the 8th or 9th time I’ve seen them live. I was 13/14 when I first saw Alkaline Trio, they played at the Academy with Face To Face and Street Dogs. It was once of my first ever shows, I remember finishing school and heading straight into town where I waited outside the venue from like 4pm for like 3hours in the freezing cold. That gig was amazing! I still remember so much about it.

Long live Alkaline Trio!

Stay Together For The Kids - 09.02.09

Went to the movies last night and watched Punisher:Warzone, it was so violent and funny, plus there was a Slipknot song thrown in there as well . . . .SWISH! Urgh! It always sucks going back to work after an awesome weekend, but hey, some good times are ahead and it’s going to be a BUSY week. Two nights of band practice, an Alkaline Trio show, a huge curry, a trip into Manchester then I’ll be jetting off to Amsterdam to celebrate my 23rd Birthday on Friday night. Flying on Friday the 13th, hmmmmmmm I’ve booked Friday off work so that I can get into town and pick-up some Euros, get some breakfast and after that I’ll be heading to see the Friday 13th remake at the AMC.

I’m on my lunch break at work, I just found out that Verse have split up. lame! But I’ve also heard that Blink182 are re-forming! YEY! That eases the pain a little

"Hi. We're blink-182. This past week there've been a lot of questions about the current status of the band, and we wanted you to hear it straight from us. To put it simply, We're back. We mean, really back. Picking up where we left off and then some. In the studio writing and recording a new album. Preparing to tour the world yet again. Friendships reformed. 17 years deep in our legacy.

Summer 2009.
Thanks and get ready.."

NICE!

Boxman!

I rarely have fun at work

Friday Night (Raaaaz!)

A trip to the pub after work followed by some sweet hangouts, a mega Dominos order accompanied by laughs and more beer. Man, I love Fridays!

Me and Nate are DJ’in at Jilly’s Rockworld on Saturday, you can find us spinnin’ some tunes in the Fishbowl room. We’ll be playing the finest in Pop-Punk, Emo, Screamo, Skate-Punk, Hardcore, Pop, Ska, basically whatever we feel like. Come along, get you’re boogie on. We did it last Saturday, it was slammin’! This is our first ‘official’ week as official DJ’s, so please come along if you can, it’d mean a lot to us

January (Minutes Away / Miles Apart)

New Years Eve 2008 was spent at Nate & Amy’s gaff (same as ’07) but it was much better than last year. It was just a small group of us huddled around the couch watching Kerrang, eating pizza, chatting shit and getting drunk. It was awesome! Phil, Kwan, Tal and Ric were there, I’ve gotten to know those guys very well now over the past few months (from starting a new band with Ric and Big Phil) it was good to welcome in the New Year with those guys and it was really cool to introduce them all to my best friends. Really nice guys and gals, I can’t wait to spend a lot more time with them all throughout the year, and on that note . . . I’ve started playing in a new hardcore band aptly named ‘All We Have’ The band consists of Ric (vocals), Nate (guitar), Phil (guitar), Cal (bass) and myself (drums). We’re in the midst of creating emotional, melodic hardcore punk in the vein of American Nightmare, Modern Life Is War, The Legacy, Verse etc. In Feb/March we’ll be heading to Bandit Studios in Gloucestershire to record some tracks for out debut EP that will hopefully be available summer ’09. Johnny Renshaw of ‘Devil Sold His Soul’ fame will be recording and mastering the record. Hopefully we’ll be playing shows in a few months, there will be some shirts and some other merch to accompany the record. I’m really enjoying playing in AWH, it’s really fun but equally serious. We’re all pushing ourselves as musicians to create new hardcore that will hopefully create an impact on the scene. I’m extremely excited to see what this band will bring. Tell all your friends, get stoked on it!

I travelled down to Camden in London with JD to the ‘’Royal Rumble’’ fest (Dead Swans, Burn Down Rome, Gold Kids, More Than Life etc) , it was a super fun weekend. All the bands were insane especially Dead Swans, they killed it! We stayed in a cool as fuck hostel at Kings Cross, we drank lots and ate shite. I love London, I have booked tickets to go back down south to see Morrissey play at The Brixton Academy in May, I’m super excited.

The River Card’s new record ‘Serious Titles’ arrived in the post at the start of the month, it’s hardly left my CD player. It’s really good! and I mean REALLY fucking good!!! I have no idea how that band are not huge. Seriously! They’re so underrated in my opinion, hopefully a lot more people will get into the record in ’09.
Polar Bear Club signed to Bridge 9, wonderful news! PBC are the new Hot Water Music, their last release was my favourite record of 2008, so it’s great to see a band like them sign onto a bigger label. They’re touring with the Gaslight Anthem next month, I’m heading to the show and I’m really excited about catching them live.

Dead Swans have also signed to Bridge 9 too! It’s so good to see a UK band sign to such a big label, there will be big things in store for that band, they deserve it too, hopefully it will lead to other UK bands getting signed to big worldwide labels such as B9, once the world is exposed to more UK bands then the UKHC scene will finally get the full recognition it deserves.

My friend Mark from work burnt me a data disk a while back with loads of old punk and some really cool alternative records on it, one of them being a Scottish Indie band named ‘Glasvegas’ their album is outstanding!! It’s one of the best indie releases that I’ve heard in a good while, its powerful stuff. It’s so dark and murky but yet so uplifting and beautiful at the same time. It’s such an honest record. I can’t stop listening to it. Battle was cool enough to put me on the guest-list for the NME awards show so I get to see them play in February.

I received the Paramore ‘Final Riot’ CD/DVD for Christmas. The DVD is of a live show in Chicago and it features interviews and other footage showing the band goofing around on ‘off days’. I love Paramore so much they seem so mature, grounded and level-headed considering they’re such a huge band. They seem really thankful of their success and they do not take a second of it for granted.

play.com had a January Sale which resulted in me spending too much money on CDs/DVDs. Other bands that have been blastin’ my stereo include Defeater, H20, Rocket From The Crypt, The Roots, Nirvana, Fall Out Boy (my good buddy JP has booked me a ticket to see them play in March, Legend!) erm . . . who else . . . Turbonegro, Miley Cyrus (the one and only) Shook Ones (touring in April! Hoo-rah!), The Carrier, Killing The Dream, Glasvegs, More Than Life, Finley Quaye, the new Morrissey record (it’s mint!) and Anthony Green. His solo work is fantastic! His voice is so unique.

We booked our flights to Amsterdam (finally) so I’ll be celebrating my 23rd birthday in style. Cal, JD, Wrench, JP and I will be there for a weekend mid-Feb.

I’ve been reading a lot recently. I read the first Twilight book of the Stephanie Myers series, I need to purchase the rest of the books now, romance and vampires, you can’t beat it. My friend Matt bought me a book named ‘Belching Out The Devil’ it’s basically about how rotten Coca-Cola is as a product and an empire. I guess it was a push towards me taking action on my Coke (a-cola) habit, which is never going to end upon my recent discovery of a vending machine at work that sells ‘Cherry Coke’ (yum!) good grief! Goodbye teeth.

I’ve come to realise that I’m extremely happy being single, I wasted most of last year pining over a girl that didn’t want me, and I don’t want to get involved with anyone because in my experience it always brings unnecessary problems. There are more important things to worry about, I’m just putting myself and my feelings first, this ensures that I’ll never get fucked over or rejected. I have no confidence when it comes to meeting girls, it’s far easier just being friends with them, it’s not that I’m boycotting romance, it’s just that I’m tired of looking. Fuck relationships.

Overall it’s been an excellent, productive and not to mention an exceptionally busy month. An excellent start to the year. I seem to be in a better place, an improved state of mind. I’m less angry, less bitter and a lot happier than I have been in previous months.

Outstanding!
